Drum roll please ... and now to announce the grand prize winners in the Southern Utah News Pigskin Predictions football contest for 2023. Finishing strong by winning the last two weeks, Andrea Gilberg takes home the top cash prize of $300. Andrea picked 68 winners out of 100 games in the 10- week, season-long battle.
I would have claimed second place with 67 correct, but I don’t feel quite right winning my own contest. So … April Riddle and Scott Buckner, who were right behind me with 65, will split the second and third place prize money (which were $150 and $50). They each win $100 for their outstanding efforts.
April led Andrea heading into the final week by one, 61-60, but stumbled down the home stretch with only four correct picks in week #10. Scott was pretty steady right from the get-go, winning week #1 in a tiebreaker. His only bad week was week #9, when he could only muster four right.
Homer Blankenship and John Hiscock finished just out of the money, with each getting 63 right. Others finishing close, but no cigar, were Gwen Corson with 62, Rocel Bettencourt and Donnie Riddle with 61 and somehow Mike Davis ended up with 60 (wait, that can’t be right.)
I want to thank all those who participated in the contest this year. It was a lot of fun. I would also like to thank the sponsors of Pigskins - Garkane Energy, Honey’s Marketplace, Zion Pharmacy, Kanab Tour Company, #1 Stage Stop, NAPA CC Auto Parts, Glazier’s Family Market, Ramsay Service Center, Kanab Family Dental and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
