Attempted break-ins at Kanab area short term rentals caught on camera

Reports circulated recently of break-in attempts being recorded by cameras observing entrances to local short-term rental units. None of the attempts recorded were successful, and while the individuals were identifiable by camera, the rental owners did not press charges or seek police attention on the issue.

“It’s up to the people who own the properties to decide whether they want a police response,” said Kanab Police Chief Tom Cram, “and where no harm was done, no property was damaged or stolen, maybe they’re leaving it to parents in the community.”

Chief Cram outlined the security concerns inherent to short term rentals like an AirBnB or similar rental service. Many of the security measures that can be taken for a rental are similar to securing a home: lights on to provide the look that someone is home, informing the neighbors of long periods where the property is going unused, visits to double check locks on windows and doors and, as is demonstrated by the attempts shown in these recent cases, surveillance of main entrances and exits where feasible.
