Cowboy basketball squads start new year with region play

The Lady Cowboys started region play with a 12-1 record after a promising pre-region schedule beating up on teams in upper 3A and 4A divisions. Ranked #1 in the 2A division, the Cowboys faced off against Parowan on the road, and handled them from the start, outscoring them in the first 42 to 15. They would cruise on to victory with a 61-26 win. Ashlynn Houston led with 14 points, and Rylee Little followed with 12.

The girls then welcomed the region foe Beaver Beavers to town on Saturday, January 6, in what proved to be a battle for the #1 ranked Lady Cowboys. The Beavers had a strong gameplan and forced the Lady Cowboys off the three-point line. In a game that went back and forth, the Beavers stretched out a ten-point lead, and held onto victory for the Lady Cowboys second loss on the season. The Lady Cowboys were one for seven from the three-point line, well below their average of making eight per game.

The Cowboys closed out the 2023 year by winning the Cowboy Classic with strong wins over the Wayne Badgers 62-50 and the Piute Thunderbirds 54-50. To start the new year and region play, the Cowboys welcomed the returning 2A state champs Parowan Rams on January 3, and with a joint effort by Kyle Brown, Cash Mortenson and Kale Glover all dropping 14 points apiece, were able to walk off the court with a win. The Cowboys then traveled to Beaver on Friday night to face the Beavers and snagged another win and a four-game winning streak as they welcome a tough 10-4 Enterprise Wolves team on Wednesday, January 10.
