On Sunday, October 6, a fire was sparked along the roadways in the unincorporated Kane County area east of Kanab. The fire spread along the dry grasses in the area and increased in size when it engulfed an RV parked on the side of the road.

Kanab Fire Department responded, along with aid from other interlocal agencies including the Fredonia Fire Department, as described by a Kanab City Council member as “Impressively quickly.” The fire was contained before it could significantly spread, though the RV was destroyed.
Citizens local to the area expressed their gratitude for the swift response from Kanab FD in specific and interlocal cooperators in general, online and at subsequent meetings in the week; the location of the fire was poignant given the ongoing discussion on fire protection and the development of a fire protection district. Had this fire occurred four days later, it had the potential to be outside of Kanab FD’s jurisdiction if the fire protection agreement between Kanab City and Kane County expired.
In the meetings that occurred on October 8, detailed in a separate report in this Southern Utah News edition, that fire agreement was renewed. Fire protection in the area will continue, with its necessity emphasized by Sunday’s fire.
