A fire started at the Kanab Landfill site on June 2, producing visible smoke and prompting emergency fire response. The fire burned over the course of the day and required management and caution in the days that followed. The West Kane County Special Service District (WKCSSD), which manages the landfill, released a statement on the event:

“On June 2 a fire was reported at the Kanab Landfill site on Kaneplex Dr. Crews are actively working the scene in an effort to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time; however, we would like to reiterate that items such as fuel, batteries, and flammable chemicals should be disposed of separately from regular household and commercial waste. The Western Kane County SSD would like to thank the Kanab Fire Department, Darren and Madison Knape, Jace Little and Justin Powell for the long hours they have contributed in an effort to put out the fire. The landfill will remain closed to the public until further notice.”
While the timing of the fire loosely coincided with the brush fire that ignited east of Kanab in the following days, reports from law enforcement indicate there was no connection between the two fires outside of the risk-factors created by the dry environment and spring heat.
The landfill closed for June 3 and 4, during which period the WKCSSD confirmed residential trash pickup would continue uninterrupted – as of the morning of June 5, while the situation continues to be monitored, the landfill has opened back up for operation.
