On April 20, 2024, an Iron County Sheriff’s Office Deputy initiated pursuit of a speeding vehicle moving toward Cedar Mountain and its resident communities. The pursuit picked up speed, at which point other agencies along the route were notified, including Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) among others, to prepare to intercept the suspect vehicle.

Per the shared press release from UHP and KCSO, “The pursuit continued to Highway 89 in Kane County and involved officers from multiple agencies. During the pursuit tire spikes were successfully deployed on the suspect vehicle near the intersection of Highway 89 and SR-14. The suspect vehicle continued south on Highway 89, where a Kane County Sheriff’s Deputy had pulled to the side of the roadway to deploy another set of tire spikes. The suspect vehicle crashed into the Deputy’s unoccupied patrol vehicle. The driver of the suspect vehicle succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash. The incident is being investigated by the Iron, Garfield, Beaver and Kane County Protocol Team.”
As the incident is still under investigation, law enforcement officials did not offer details such as the identity of the suspect, potential motives or the possibility of driving under the influence.
