After a three week break from competition, the KHS varsity track teams were back in action last weekend at the Dixie Invitational. The meet was a two-day event and hosted 1A-4A schools from all over Utah. The Lady Cowboys finished in an impressive fifth overall, and the boys’ team finished in seventh. Both teams boasted top finishers and showed the competition that Kanab can hold their own on the track.

Senior speedster Travis Stewart won the 400 meters with a time of 50.55, almost two full seconds ahead of second place. Kenidee Glazier also showed the big schools how it’s done by winning the 3200 meters in a time of 11:16.29. The boys Sprint Medley Relay team of Anthony Barca, Logan Little, Travis Stewart and Daxton Jones edged out North Sanpete for the gold and qualified the relay for state.
Other top finishers included: Madi Orton, high jump (5’ 3”) - second place and long jump (14’ 11.25”) - fourth, Kenidee Glazier, 1600 (5:09.73) - second place, Rylee Little, high jump (5’ 2”) - third place, Haylie McQuivey, javelin (103’ 3.5”) - sixth place.
Three Cowboys and one Lady Cowboy punched their ticket to state in individual events, with Seniors Logan Little and Daxton Jones leading the charge, qualifying in the 400 meters. Little ran a time of 53.06 in the preliminaries and made finals in the event, while Jones turned in a time of 53.43 and just missed making the final. Teammate Karter Ramsay had a state qualifying throw in the discus with a toss of 113” 8”, a personal best for the Junior. Sophomore jumper, Emilie Gilberg also got it done in the high jump with a leap of 4’8” and had great attempts at 4’10” as well.
School records also fell during the meet, with Freshman, Kenidee Glazier bettering her time in the 1600 and breaking her own school record in the process. We suspect she will continue to beat her own time again as again before the season is over. The boys 4x200 meter relay team (an event not currently contested for 1A-3A schools in Utah at the State Championships) of Anthony Barca, Daxton Jones, Travis Stewart and Waylon White also broke the school record in the event with a time of 1:35.90. The previous school record of 1:37.03 was set back in 2016 by Brandon Southwick, Alex Foster, Ernesto Escobar and Danion Barnson.
In addition to all the state qualifying marks, top finishes and school records, the Cowboys finished with 21 personal records and five additional seasonal bests, while the Lady Cowboys finished with 15 personal records and nine additional seasonal bests. Making it truly a great weekend to be a Cowboy.
The Cowboys travel to two meets this weekend, Water Canyon on Friday, April 28, and Cedar on Saturday, April 29. Full results from both meets, as well as the entire season can be found online at runnercard.com, and more team photos and information can be found on Instagram @khstrackandcross.
