It was a poignant moment for many Kanab residents when the condemnation of the facility hosting the old Kanab Elementary School was announced. In cooperation with Kane County, the Kane County School District (KCSD) confirmed they would be demolishing the old elementary school building, selling or donating many of its assets and considering new uses for the centrally located Kanab property.

Yet another poignant moment came last week, when the actual demolition was executed, with heavy machinery reducing the old building to rubble to be cleaned up and shipped away.
The deconstruction of the school was more efficient via agreements with the County, who contributed labor and machinery, and now the KCSD and county officials are sending out polls and calling for feedback on how the community would have the property used. Some of the current proposals include a dog park, parking for toy-hauler-sized RV’s that could double as an event venue or a recreational park for local and visitor use.
Citizens can access feedback avenues by getting in touch with the County or School District via their websites, kane.utah.gov or kanek12.org respectively. This topic is being actively considered at County Commission meetings and School Board meetings, both which are open to the public, as are their respective minutes and agendas.
