The Kanab High School track teams made the short trek over to Cedar City last week for the SUU High School Colosseum Championships. It was another one for the books as Cowboys came home with four new state qualifying marks, two new school records and numerous personal and seasonal bests!

Anthony Barca started things off for the Cowboys by running a state-qualifying time of 11.79 in the 100 meters, a 0.21 second personal best for the Junior and his first individual state qualification! He was followed by nearly every Cowboy sprinter running a personal best in both the 100 and the 200 meters, truly a phenomenal meet for the Cowboy sprint squad!
Sprints were not the only highlights for the Cowboys, in their typical 2024 fashion, the Cowboy throwers were on their “A” game yet again. Boasting a total of 11 personal bests in the Shot Put, Discus and Javelin, the throws remain a dominant factor for the Kanab Cowboys this season. Two new state qualifying marks came out of the ring, as Juniors, Preston Brown and Nate Stewart both threw personal bests in the Shot Put and punched their tickets (again) to the state meet. Brown, in just his second time throwing the orb this season, knocked out a whopping 40’ 6” throw, while Stewart punched in a throw of 40’ 4”. Brown is currently qualified in the 100, 200, Discus and Shot Put with eyes on the 400 meters as well.
Javelin was the final highlight for the Cowboys, as track newcomer, Troy Federkeil qualified for state in the Javelin with a throw of 139’ 2”, beating his personal best by 14’, and Dixon Kelly placed second overall with a whopping toss and personal best of 164’ 8”!
The Cowboy sprint squad started things off again on day two of the meet with the 4x200 meter Relay. The team of Preston Brown, Anthony Barca, Easton Ott and Troy Federkeil ran a blistering time of 1:35.44 in the event, beating the old school record (set last year by Anthony Barca, Daxton Jones, Waylon White and Travis Stewart) by 0.46 seconds!
Personal Bests turned in for the Cowboys came from the following: Anthony Barca (100, 200), Camden Cartwright (100, 200), Easton Ott (100, 400), Jacob Barca (100, 200), Kaleb Warner (200), Troy Federkeil (100, 200, Jav), Preston Brown (400, Disc, Shot), Braxton Brown (800), Kooper Swindlehurst (800), Matthew Elliot (800), Austin Church (1600), Mason Roundy (3200), Britton Little (Shot), Nate Stewart (Shot, Jav), Ryker Chavez (Shot), Wyatt Orton (Shot), Aiden Wright (Disc), Karter Ramsay (Disc) and Dixon Kelly (Jav).
On the girls’ side, the Lady Cowboys were led by Kenidee Glazier and Haylie McQuivey. Glazier ran a personal best time of 59.13 in the prelims of the 400 meters, placing second overall and beating her old school record in the process. The sophomore was also able to place second in the 1600 meter. McQuivey had a great day in the Javelin, throwing close to her personal best three separate times. Her throw of 107’ 6” was enough to place the Senior third overall and score her team six points.
Other highlights from the Lady Cowboys came from the following: Emilie Gilberg (100, 200, HJ, LJ), Lydia Beazer (100, HJ, LJ), Shae Church (100, 300H), Alie Johnson (200), Savannah Bateman (800) and Janae Beckstead (Disc).
