This year marks a landmark celebration for Utah’s rich film history, commemorating 100 years since the state’s first film was shot and the 50th anniversary of the Utah Film Commission. In honor of these significant milestones, the Utah Film Commission, in collaboration with the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, is rolling out a year-long celebration of Utah’s cinematic heritage with a series of exhibits, events and film screenings across the state.
The centerpiece of the celebration is a traveling exhibit, “100 Years of Utah Film & Television,” which will make its next stop at the Kanab Museum. From August 23rd through September 23rd, visitors to the museum will have the unique opportunity to explore the evolution of film in Utah through an engaging display of photographs and stories.
The year 1924 holds special significance as it marks the debut of film productions in Utah, with notable films like The Deadwood Coach - starring Tom Mix and filmed in Kanab - showcasing the area’s breathtaking landscapes. This film not only highlighted Kanab’s scenic beauty but also cemented its place in the cinematic world, setting the stage for the region’s enduring role as a coveted filming location.
