Kane County swears in elected officials and formalizes 2025 commission assignments

At a meeting held at noon on January 6, Kane County officials, staff and members of the public gathered for the swearing in of the year’s newly elected and reelected officials and the commission assignments for the year - the commission chambers were full almost to capacity. The meeting lasted about twenty minutes, directly addressing the two agenda items before adjourning. Commissioner Patty Kubeja conducted the meeting as chair.

Proceedings began with the swearing in of elected officials. County Treasurer Keiren Chatterley and County Assessor Ryan Maddux were reelected to their positions; Isis Smith was elected as County Recorder, filling the seat of former Recorder Ver Jean Caruso who retired this year, and Gwen Brown was elected to Commission Seat C, formerly held by outgoing Commissioner Wade Heaton. Swearings in were performed by County Clerk Auditor Chameill Lamb, who administered the oath of office.

Once the swearing in was complete, the meeting moved to the commission assignments for the year. Said Commissioner Kubeja, “I’m proud to be a part of this commission.” Commissioner Celeste Meyeres added, “Thank you all for being so actively involved in this electorate.”

Commissioner Brown concluded, “Thank you to everybody who got me here, I will do my best to represent you.”

The newly assembled commission then voted to make commission assignments official by resolution, with some assignments of note including Commissioner Kubeja over the Active Living Center, Healthy Kane County Foundation and the Office of Tourism, as well as Cedar Mountain, Church Wells and East Zion SSD’s; Commissioner Meyeres over Public Lands, Roads, the Five-County Association and the continuing RS 2477 litigation; and Commissioner Brown over Land Use, County Human Resources and ongoing interaction with Alton Coal. Brown was also assigned liaison to multiple county bodies such as Justice Court, School District, and the Hospital Board and Western Kane County Special Service Districts. The entirety of the assignment list is available on the Utah Public Notice website, in the Agenda Meeting Packet for today’s meeting.

Commissioner Kubeja then moved to position Commissioner Meyeres as this year’s Commissioner Chair, which was unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned, with some extra time allotted for pictures with newly elected officials and family members to commemorate the swearing in.
