Over 2,400 runners gathered in Salt Lake last weekend to compete in the Cross-Country Pre-State Meet.
The meet allows athletes from all over Utah to race on the state course early in the season. Races are not separated by school size, and our 2A Cowboys and Lady Cowboys took the 1A-6A competition head on. Every single runner wearing a Kanab jersey ran a seasonal best on the 3.1-mile course.
Kenidee Glazier continued her dominant debut season placing 11th overall, out of a field of 975 female runners. The freshman sensation won the morning Freshman/Sophomore session by over 30 seconds and led the race the entire way. There is no doubt that she would have run even faster when against some of the elder classmen that later that day. The lady cowboys also had great finishes from senior Cydnee Castagno and freshman Ila Kerr.
It was a day for the Freshman for the Cowboys, as freshman, Trey Castagno was the top finisher on the boys’ side. He narrowly edged out senior, Tyson Brinkerhoff for the top spot on the Cowboy team. Senior, Daxton Jones, sophomore, Austin Church and senior, Jackson Clark rounded out the top five.
Coaches Levi LeFevre and Chad Castagno were thrilled with how their teams ran. “This was such a good week for both teams,” said Coach LeFevre. “Every kid ran hard and pushed themselves on this course against some tough competition. It’s really easy for kids to get caught up in the chaos of such a large meet, and our kids kept a cool head and ran their race. They held their composure and raced the way we know they can.”
Cross Country travels to Enterprise next week, September 28, then follows quickly with a home meet on Wednesday, October 5, at the Thunderbird Golf Course in Mt. Carmel.
