After a significant delay in start time, the Cowboys and Lady Cowboys got down to business and made some waves. Junior Lydia Beazer started off the day with a state qualifying high jump of 4’ 9”, while Senior Waylon White crushed his PR in the long jump with a massive leap of 22’ 0”. Senior Travis Stewart qualified in yet another event, punching his fourth ticket to State in the Javelin, with a throw of 142’ 4”. The girls Medley relay team of Madi Orton, Savannah Bateman, Rylee Little and Kenidee Glazier not only broke the old school record of 4:33.11, set back in 2019 by Brinley Unsworth, Caroline Giddings, Bethany Nording and Macie Stewart, but did it in style with a time of 4:26.50. The girls 4x100 meter relay team of Rylee Little, Ellie Banks, Madi Orton and London Fenus also punched their ticket to State for the Cowboys with a time of 53.33.
Kanab High School boys’ and girls’ teams both finished in 1st place and had multiple top three finishes. On Saturday, April 29, still a little worn out from their day before, the Cowboy and Lady Cowboy track teams traveled to Cedar City to compete in the Cedar High School Invitational. Waylon White continued his fantastic weekend, by making finals in both the 100 meters and the long jump, running a personal best time of 11.42 and jumping a respectable 20’ 10”. Madi Orton set a new seasonal best in the high jump and won the event with a leap of 5’ 4”, with teammate Rylee Little also tied her seasonal best, coming in third with a jump of 5’ 2”. Sophomore Rider Allen made finals in the 110 Meter Hurdles with a career best time of 16.26, and also turned in a State Qualifying (and personal best) time of 43.42 in the 300 Meter Hurdles later that day. Senior Travis Stewart won the 200 meters, with a seasonal best time of 22.70, while fellow Senior, London Fenus qualified for state in the long jump with a leap of 15’ 7”, placing sixth in the event.
Kenidee Glazier was the standout athlete of the meet, bringing home 1st place in the 400 Meters, 800 Meters and 1600 Meters. She also broke school records in the 400 Meters (1:00.17) and the 800 Meters (2:18.81). She now holds the school records in the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 and is only a Freshman! The previous 400 meter record of 1:00.32 was set back in 2006 by Ashleigh Cserepes, and the previous 800 meter record of 2:22.59 was set back in 2003 by Samantha Hamblin (Now KHS Track coach, Samantha LeFevre).
Another school record that went down in Cedar City, was the girls’ Shot Put. Sophomore, Taylor Janes launched a whopping 35’ 5.5” throw to break the old record of 35’ 1”, set just last year, by Abbey Bateman. Janes, a standout member of the KHS softball team as well, had a great warm up the night before, scoring two home runs in the Lady Cowboy’s game against Panguitch - one of which was a grand slam.
