Sources local to Kanab recently released security footage of an accident on the intersection of 100 E. and 300 S. occurring on November 18 just after 8 a.m. The video shows Kanab Police Chief Tom Cram turning left on the intersection and striking 58-year-old Michael Dimino on as he attempted to cross the crosswalk. The video of the incident is currently available on KSL’s report of the story.

When asked for a statement by the Southern Utah News, Chief Cram responded, “I can’t say much, because the litigation is ongoing - just that the incident was an accident, and I hope he gets better soon.” Chief Cram states the position of the sun contributed to the accident, impeding his vision as he turned eastward in the early morning. The Kanab City Police have confirmed Cram continues in his position as chief and according to the report by KSL, local legal counsel states the incident was not an officer-involved critical incident - per KSL, the Kanab City Attorney declined to review the case due to conflict of interest, and the case is now being looked into by the Garfield County Attorney’s office.

A Facebook post on Dimino’s behalf states his injuries include a fractured arm and leg, six fractured ribs and multiple abrasions. Utah Highway patrol reports label the injuries “moderate to severe,” and Dimino is currently hospitalized and in recovery. Per the statement, “His anticipated recovery time is six to eight weeks. Mr. Dimino wishes to emphasize that the incident was accidental and not intentional. He acknowledges the hazards of the area and does not desire any adverse repercussions for Chief Cram. I [Elizabeth Patton] am organizing a fundraiser for Mr. Dimino. Due to GoFundMe’s fees, we will utilize Venmo, with his trusted friend, Robert McKay, overseeing the funds. Please consider donating to support Mr. Dimino during this challenging time. Alternatively, visits or prayers are greatly appreciated.”

Patton and McKay have taken the initiative on the crowdfunding campaign, and Patton can be reached at her page under “Lizzie Ann” for more information on how to contribute.
