The SUV carrying a squad of KHS Cheerleaders was struck head-on coming home from the volleyball game in Parowan on Tuesday, September 24.
Around Apple Valley, a drunk driver swerved into their lane and totaled the team’s Suburban. A Kanab local returning from the same game witnessed the scene and stopped to help; she stated of the accident, “Our girls were very lucky, the angle was the best possible outcome for the care to take most of the impact.”
All nine individuals in the SUV were transported to the hospital for medical attention - all were treat- ed for concussions, with some requiring additional treatment, but all nine, cheerleaders and coaches, came away with only minor injuries.
The status of the other vehicle’s driver is unconfirmed - incident reports state this was his second drunk driving incident, and there were open containers of alcohol and other drugs in the vehicle. Some reports indicate he was also driving on a suspended license.
Kane County School District and Kanab High School sources expressed their relief that none of the team or coaches were majorly harmed in the incident, with one such source stating the school officials feel very blessed that everyone is okay.
